The source of my inspiration this week was the work of John William Waterhouse(1849-1917). Though he is often considered a Pre-Raphaelite painter for the technique, his work is more neo-classical in theme. He paints the femme fatale of roman myths, and poems of Keats and Tennyson. His colors are striking expressions of the story of these women. Circe was an evil enchantress who was jealous of Glaucus' love for Scylla, and who in her jealousy cast a spell on Scylla, transforming the lower half of Scylla's body into 6 fearless dogs. Scylla went to hide in a cave, and Glaucus continued pursuing her but to no avail. Waterhouse captures Circe's sombre yet mesmerizing personality in this mysterious painting. The colors are dark yet seem to glow with the magic of Circe.
